Developing the next generation of NorESM requires a substantial community effort. NorESM has been a major contributor to the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) in phases 5 and 6. With the 7th phase on the horizon, preparing NorESM3 is a key priority for the Norwegian climate research community. Assembling an Earth System Model is a complex process that involves collaboration from many experts. To coordinate these efforts, more than 40 climate model developers and researchers from seven leading climate research institutions in Norway gathered for an intensive two-day workshop in Bergen.
The workshop began with an overview of the current state of the newly integrated NorESM2.5 code, covering its features, progress, and the remaining tasks needed to enable more widespread use. Participants then received updates from the model component (i.e. atmosphere, land, ocean, land ice, sea ice and biogeochemistry) leads, who focused on ongoing model development, alignment with the CMIP timeline, managing NorESM and community dependencies, and analyzing the latest results from NorESM2.5 alpha simulations.
The latter part of the workshop was dedicated to group discussions, addressing key areas such as communication strategies, documentation improvements, task force coordination, and setting priorities. The event concluded with a look at exciting new capabilities that may be integrated into future versions of NorESM, setting the stage for the model’s continued evolution.
